Historical roleplay: period voice without modern morals

Historical fiction asks the model to let its characters believe things the model was trained to correct. That tension is where most historical roleplay goes wrong.

What historical fiction needs

A convincing historical story needs material detail (what people ate, wore, paid and feared), characters whose values belong to their time, and plot that respects what was possible: no letters arriving overnight across an ocean. The model has to let a Roman senator, a Tudor courtier or a 1920s factory owner hold views that are uncomfortable now, without the narrator stepping in. Historical periods were also violent in ways the story needs to show.

Language is a balancing act. Full period dialogue becomes tiring to read and the model tends to get it wrong, mixing centuries. A light touch works better: period nouns, titles and forms of address, with modern sentence structure, so the reader feels the time without wading through it.

Where mainstream models break the period

Filtered models modernize. Characters voice contemporary attitudes, servants talk back to lords with no consequences, and anyone holding a period-typical prejudice either learns better by the end of the scene or is marked out as the villain. Executions, plague and battlefield surgery get softened. And historical figures cause trouble: mainstream models are cautious about depicting real people, which matters here.

On that point, our terms do not allow content aimed at real people. Historical settings work best with invented characters moving through real events, which is also how most historical novels are written.

Prompt and card tips

  • Pick a year and a place. "London, 1665" gives the model far more to work with than "Victorian times".
  • Write a material detail list. Money, food, travel times, lighting, medicine, in a lorebook entry.
  • Separate narrator from characters. Tell the model characters hold period beliefs and the narrator does not comment on them.
  • Invent the cast. Real events can be the backdrop; the people in your scenes should be fictional.

Sample system prompt

Narrate historical fiction set in London during the plague year of 1665.
All named characters are fictional; real events form the background.
Use period-accurate material detail from the lorebook: money, food, travel,
medicine, light. No anachronisms.
Characters hold the beliefs and prejudices of their time. The narrator does not
comment on them or correct them. Disease and violence are shown honestly.
Dialogue suggests period speech without heavy archaism. Never write {{user}}'s actions.

Samplers and model choice

glm-5.3-outlaw is the strongest on the line for historical detail and keeping a period consistent, which makes it the first pick for serious historical fiction. outlaw-1 is the cheaper choice for lighter period romance or adventure, and its image input lets you attach a period map or painting for reference.

Failure modes and fixes

  • Modern characters in costume. Add a line on what the protagonist's class and gender could and could not do.
  • Thee-and-thou overload. Ask for period vocabulary in nouns and manners, plain modern grammar.
  • Anachronisms. Lower temperature and add a "does not exist yet" list.
  • History lessons. Tell the narrator to show period detail in action, never explain it.

FAQ

Can I roleplay with real historical figures?

Content aimed at real people is not allowed. Use invented characters moving through real events, which is how most historical fiction works anyway.

How do I stop the AI from giving characters modern values?

Tell the model characters hold period beliefs and the narrator does not comment on or correct them. Give a year, a place and the protagonist's social position.

Which model knows history best?

GLM 5.3 Outlaw is the strongest on the line for period detail and consistency. Lower temperature to around 0.8 to reduce invented facts.
